Earthdog

What is Earthdog?

An Earthdog test is to test a dog’s ability to follow game and “work it”. Either artificial or cage-protected live quarry is used for the tests.  MCFTC uses cage-protected quarry. Levels of Earthdog tests are Introduction to Quarry, Novice, Junior Earthdog, Senior Earthdog and Master Earthdog.  Dogs are registered with the AKC or have been recorded with the FSS and are six months of age or older may participate in AKC Earthdog tests.  They do not need to be intact and purebred dogs and that have been assigned “Indefinite Listing Privilege”  (ILP) numbers, may also participate.

A copy of the current Rules and Regulations for Earthdog can be obtained through the AKC website.

Two new classes have been added.

Novice Title and Earthdog Excellent Title!

Effective February 1, 2022, the Novice class will offer a NE title after having qualified in the Novice Earthdog test in two (2) AKC licensed or member club tests under two different judges. The Novice class is an instinct test requiring very little previous exposure to earthwork. It is very similar to the Introduction to Quarry class except the handler and judge may not provide encouragement once the dog is released. The new Novice class is positioned between the Intro to Quarry and Junior classes.

Effective May 1, 2022, the Earthdog Excellent title is for dogs that pass the Junior, Senior or Master level test on six occasions after earning the initial title at that level. To earn an Excellent title, a dog must on six occasions pass the Junior, Senior or Master level test respectively after the dog has earned its JE, SE or ME title. The Excellent title by level is Junior Excellent Earthdog (JXE), Senior Excellent Earthdog (SXE) and Master Excellent Earthdog (MXE). The Excellent title may be earned repeatedly. A number will appear after the title for every six additional passes. Legs that count toward a dog’s Excellent title may also be counted toward a dog’s Endurance Earthdog title
